Heart disease is any condition or problem that affects your heart. Therefore, there are various kinds of heart diseases which the performance of the heart directly through abnormal heartbeats, cause defects and affect the functioning of the blood vessels connected to it.

What are the symptoms of heart problems?

Symptoms of common heart disease include:

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain, numbness, weakness in limbs caused by the narrowing of blood vessels
  • Pain in the neck, upper back or abdomen

Causes – Atherosclerosis

Symptoms of heart arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats) are:

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Light-headedness
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting

Causes- Heart defects, Coronary artery disease, Diabetes, High blood pressure, Smoking, Drug abuse, dietary supplements, Excessive use of alcohol or caffeine, Stress, particular over-the-counter medications, prescription medications, herbal medicines and Valvular heart disease.

Symptoms of heart disease caused by heart defects:

  • Skin becomes pale gray or blue
  • Swelling in the legs, abdomen or areas around the eyes
  • Shortness of breath during feedings in infants
  • Getting breatless which in daily activity
  • Swelling in the limbs

Causes- genes, medications and medical conditions.

Symptoms of heart disease caused by weak heart muscles:

  • Breathlessness
  • Swelling of feet
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Dizziness and fainting

Causes- Dilated cardiomyopathy, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and Restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Symptoms of heart disease caused by weak heart infections:

  • Pericarditis
  • Myocarditis
  • Endocarditis

Causes: bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Symptoms of heart disease caused by valvular heart diseases:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Swollen feet or ankles
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting

Causes: Rheumatic fever, Infections, and Connective tissue disorders.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis can take the form of ECG, Holter monitoring, Echocardiogram, Cardiac catheterization, CT scan and MRI.
