What Is Anemia?

Haemoglobin is protein molecules which help to carry oxygen from one part of the body to another. However, there are times when the body’s haemoglobin count decreases and it is unable to transfer oxygen. Such a condition is called Anaemia. Generally, this happens due to the low quantity of iron in blood.

What Are Its Symptoms?

The symptoms of anaemia include fatigue, headache, depression, coldness in limbs, paleness, pain in chest, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, nausea and dizziness.

What Are There Risks?

There are some factors which increase the risk percentage, including:

  • Inherited anaemia
  • Chronic infections
  • Poor diet
  • Family history of anaemia
  • Considerable blood loss
  • Kids younger than 2 years
  • Women of child bearing age
  • Serious sickness

What To Do?

Now that you know the symptoms, it becomes easier. When you do see these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately and get a blood test with haemoglobin count. If anaemia occurs during surgery, or while one is about to have a baby, one needs to opt for a medical consultation immediately. The approach is proactive and discourages blood transfusions. If you are over 50 years of age, choose regular colon screening which arrests possible internal bleeding and diagnoses cancer.

Treatments take the form of oral medications, intravenous medications, intake of vitamins and counselling.
