Gastroenterology and Hepatology are branches of medicine that treat patients with problems related to the liver and digestive tract. We are a specialist in the diagnosis and management of cases in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Kolkata, where we treat a wide range of diseases and disorders concerning the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, bile ducts, small intestine, pancreas, and colon. The focus of this medical speciality attends to complications starting from the passage of food through the digestive canal to the physiological processes of food digestion, absorption of nutrients into the body, and bowel movements.
Common gastrointestinal illnesses include diarrhea, acid reflux or GERD, chronic constipation,
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease and rectal cancer among others. The majority of the diseases can be cured with timely diagnosis or managed with non-surgical or surgical procedures. When diagnosing GI disorders, it is classified into two categories, Functional and Structural.
Functional GI disorders are concerned with how the GI system functions, and its diagnosis does not necessarily reveal any problem or anomalies to the structural form of the GI tract. Some of the common Functional GI Disorders are listed below.
Motility, sensation, and brain-gut dysfunction are the three main characteristics of Functional GI disorders.
Structural gastrointestinal diseases are associated with physical anomalies inside the GI system which can be seen on examinations such as an abdominal x-ray or a USG. The surgical excision or correction of the structural abnormalities is required for the treatment and management of structural GI diseases. Some of the common Structural GI Disorders are listed below.
Untreated structural GI issues frequently result in worsening symptoms as well as severe complications.
While structural GI disorders are easier to examine, routine testing for diagnosing functional GI problems is frequently negative. Moreover, the functional symptoms often vary from person to person. This is why the treatment of FGIDs can have many uncertain aspects and be challenging for doctors to diagnose. Advanced research is being conducted at our department of Gastrointestinal and Hepatology Treatment in Kolkata where our experts are dedicated to improving the understanding of FGIDs. Many of our doctors follow symptom-based criteria for diagnosing FGIDs. Overall, the treatment of FGIDs mostly works by treating the symptom only.

We conduct the following procedures under our facility to aid our patients:
Polypectomy is the procedure to remove polyps, which are tiny nodule-like tissues developing inside the intestines. These structures are mostly benign and usually harmless. However, in some cases, the tissues may develop into malignant tumors, causing cancer. That’s why our doctors recommend early Polypectomy to avoid the risk. At LIV GASTRO we perform snare polypectomy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy techniques on an outpatient basis to remove small Pedunculated polyps. But, if the polyp is too large for standard endoscopy to remove, then patients would require surgery.
Internal hemorrhoids are adequately treated by Haemorrhoid Ligation. An endoscope filled with specialized rubber bands is inserted into the anus by a trained doctor. Suction is used to grab a hemorrhoid. Then, with the help of a rubber band ligator device, a rubber band is wrapped around the base of the hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid then shrinks and dies, falling off approximately in a week. This is the most effective, virtually painless, and nonsurgical treatment for piles.
Anal fissures are a type of ulcer that develops in the skin just before it enters the rectum. These ulcers are often painful and require prompt excision to provide relief to the sufferer. We use Infrared Laser (Electrocautery) procedure through Radio Excision technology to cauterize the ulcers and remove them permanently. This procedure is one of the few non-invasive therapeutic options available that could be a painless and way less expensive alternative to traditional surgery.
A gastrointestinal fistula is an abnormal opening in the digestive tract that allows gastric juices to leak out through the stomach or intestines’ lining. The gastric fluids can be infectious when they come into contact with the skin or other critical organs. There are no medications to treat this disease. Our doctors combine a range of outpatient procedures to treat different types of Fistulas. This includes replenishing the gastric fluids, providing wound care to protect the skin and prevent sepsis, improving the balance of gastric fluid acids among others. For severe cases, surgery is recommended.
When the patient is incapable of taking food by the mouth, even liquids, they are artificially fed through a specially designed feeding tube, called Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy
(PEG) tube. The tube is directly inserted inside the patient’s stomach, bypassing the mouth or the esophagus. An endoscopic camera is utilized to navigate the accurate place inside the GI tract where the tube should be placed and a small incision is made in the stomach to insert the PEG tube.
Stricture dilation or the enlargement of a narrowed bowel segment is a procedure used to treat a range of disorders, the most frequent of which is esophageal strictures. Most benign esophageal strictures are thought to be caused by chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Peptic Strictures are a type of esophageal stricture that occurs in the distal esophagus and is shorter in length. Esophageal dilatation is commonly done as an outpatient treatment with a dilator, and endoscopy and dilation can be done in the same session. Doctors may employ various types of balloons (filled with water or air) or rubber bougies to extend the size of the esophagus or other organ, depending on the size and location of the obstruction.
Esophageal stents are analgesic devices that are inserted into the esophagus to recanalize a clogged esophagus, helping patients to swallow soft foods and liquids when they cannot do so naturally. The placement of esophageal stents is a standard way to feed a patient with dysphagia caused by inoperable esophageal tumors or cancer. We make it a simple and painless process to install esophageal stents that do not require any surgical intervention. The procedure doesn’t cause any discomfort and does not necessitate frequent medical examinations.
Sometimes, certain conditions are not revealed readily in initial diagnoses despite the persistence of symptoms. For such cases, patients must form a close relationship with their gastroenterologist to have a systematic prognosis.
We at LIVGASTRO make sure that our patients get that compatibility with their doctor and caregivers so that they can communicate freely to speed up their recovery back to health. Contact us for the treatment of all kinds of gastrointestinal issues.
